Experience...

It is something you can't put a price on. There is no substitute for experience.   I have several hundred weddings under my belt along with over 500 studio sessions a year.  We started only 7 short years ago, setting out to be different and to make a name for ourself armed with only an old Fuji DSLR and a truck load of determination. While some people say you should focus on a specialty, we photograph a little bit of everything and it has worked out pretty good for us so far.

Along with photographing, I also teach on a national level and offer quarterly workshops, sharing our entire buisness with other photographers. To see all things workshop related, visit BlairPhillipsWorkshops.com

Lamb Shots Was Awesome!

Do you remember going to the petting zoo when you were a kid? That feeling of petting an animal that wasn’t a cat or dog was always such a very unique feeling. Several weeks back, we had the opportunity give some little guys and girls that feeling for the very first time. Our Limited Edition session Lamb Shots turned out to be a hit with both kids and their parents, giving them some really unique Easter images.

We were able to snag our new fury friends from Clippity Clop to You located in Locust, NC. After meeting the owners, we immediately knew that we were in good hands because they truly cared about their clients as well as their animals. For this session, we had 2 spunky lambs (one white and one chocolate) and 3 rabbits (2 little guys and 1 Giant Flemming) join us. These were some of the most well behaved animals we have worked with yet. The lamb stayed in his spot for several long stents of time and the rabbits were very content, as long as they were eating!

For the most part, all the kids loved the animals. Much to our surprise, we didn’t have one melt down or anything! When you’re working with kids as young as we do, you have to prepare and expect the worst because you never know how they might react to an animal that is as big as they are. With Mom’s and Dad’s close by, we shot image and image without a single tear and those images turned out to be some of my favorite images from any of our Limited Edition sessions. Take a look at some images from Lamb Shots below!

April 11, 2012 - 9:32 am Savannah Marett - I would have to say my favorite Easter moment would have to be a few years ago and going to sunrise service on the beach. It was just an awesome experience and you could truly feel that God was present as you were watching the sunrise behind the preacher.

April 11, 2012 - 10:29 am Linda Kain - Blair, We recently had the pleasure of visiting your studio while we were in Charlotte. We are from New York. We were at the studio to view our grandson, Pierce O. Wing's first birthday pictures. The pictures are absolutely amazing. I have never seen such beautiful shots. It was very difficult for his mommy and daddy to choose. Although my first glimpse of the picture with Pierce at the steering wheel in the pick-up was my first choice. Of course, I had to have that picture to display back home. Another favorite of ours was the picture of Pierce on the piano keys and I look forward to seeing all of the pictures in the album that Ashley ordered. I also ordered one of the black leather bracelets with his picture on it and now that we have returned to NY I am patiently awaiting the bracelet so I can share it with all of our NY grandparents. On another note, the lamb pictures on your website are incredible! Each picture has it's own marking. I only wish we lived closer and would love to do a grandparents picture with Pierce next time we are in Charlotte. Thank you for making our everyday life so wonderful looking at the pictures on our mantle of little Pierce - they are so life like it's like he's right there visiting us! Linda & Rick Kain

April 11, 2012 - 10:50 am sarah hollifield - Ok this is beautiful! It reminds me of when our kids were little. Both had a lamb cake for their 1st birthday, as did Ron (dad) had on his 1st birthday. Would love to carry in the tradition when we get grands. But better yet a photo other a real lamb! So precious!!! A27A

April 15, 2012 - 5:51 pm Alice Ernst - I Love the Rustic Background with all the fresh veggies & the close ups of the animals. Captures the Season Perfectly ! Beautiful expressions on the Children !

Lamb Shots | A 2012 Limited Edition Session

Around this time of the year, we start to get really excited here at the studio because it usually means that Easter season photos are just around the corner. Each year, we try to bring in several cute bunnies for our kiddos to cuddle up with during their Easter session but this year, we’re blowing the roof of this place.

Lamb Shots

Lamb Shots, this years Easter Limited Edition Session, will be complete with two precious baby lambs, ready to be petted and played with. As if the two cute lambs weren’t enough, we’re also having two adorable Giant Fleming rabbits! Now, if you’ve never seen a Giant Fleming rabbit, they are a sight to be seen for sure. Have you ever seen those huge stuffed rabbits at a county or state fair? Picture those but real! These  ”little” guys are the coolest things you’ve ever seen, weighting in at least 15 pounds! They will for sure make a great addition to this years Limited Edition session!

Lamb Shots will be held on Saturday, March 17th and this is a one time only session so be sure to contact the studio and reserve your session time. Sessions are scheduled in 15 minute intervals and special Limited Edition pricing is available. If you’d like to schedule your session, call (704) 855-3656 and a Blair Phillips Photography team member will be glad to set you up with a session! In the meantime, tell us about your favorite Easter memory! Leave a comment below

WPPI, Here We Come!

It is truly a great feeling to know that something you say can revolutionize someones business and/or life. I’ve been so fortunate to be able to help inspire and educate so many photographers over the past several years and I’m more excited than ever to share what’s worked in our studio with other photographers. One of my absolute favorite conventions in the U.S is WPPI. WPPI is one of the nation’s largest photography conventions, specializing in wedding, portrait, and senior photography. This annual event is held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand and is actually the birthplace of my educational speaking!

MGM Grand

This year will mark the third year of sharing at WPPI and I am more than honored to have a part in such an incredible organization. In years past, my program has focused on our rock solid wedding photography but this year, we wanted to change it up a little bit and focus on high school senior portraits.  WPPI was excited and on board for the program so we immediately hit the ground running and I absolutely can’t wait for my class. If you are attending WPPI and would like to attend my class, you will find it on the schedule for Monday the 20th at 3 p.m. I’ll be covering everything from marketing, lighting, posing and giving away tons of free stuff from H&H Color Lab, Animoto Pro, Tamrac, Life Camera Actions and more! Be sure to attend!

On top of the class, I just can’t wait to be back in Vegas again. Because this trip has become somewhat of an annual thing for Suzy and I, we’ve been able to see a lot of the city and it has quickly become one of our favorite cities. There is just simply so much to do there! Last year, along we going to classes and the WPPI trade show, we saw several shows including Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil “Elvis,” shopped at the Forum Shops at Caesars and hit it big playing Craps at the MGM. We’re fortunate enough to be able to bring all of our staff with us to this years WPPI so it is going to be an incredibly fun trip as well as a fantastic learning experience.

If you ever have the chance to visit Las Vegas, be sure to go. It is a wonderful opportunity to see some of the worlds best entertainment, tastiest food and most beautiful hotels. If you’re not into gambling, no worries. There is plenty to do in the city outside of the Roulette table. To prove it, here is a list of some of our Vegas favorites:

  1. Check out the Bellagio Fountains! This is an awesome, free show that is truly a sight to see.
  2. Cirque du Soleil – These shows feature some of the worlds greatest gymnasts. “O” has been our favorite so far.
  3. New York-New York Roller Coaster – Who doesn’t love coasters?!
  4. MGM Lion Exhibit – Watching the King of the jungle do his thing is awe-inspiring.
  5. The Stratosphere – If you’re afraid of heights, don’t come here but if you want a great view of Vegas, this is your place.
  6. If you are into gambling, I would recommend the MGM or Venetian Casinos.

I’m so pumped for WPPI and can’t wait to share with 450 eager-to-learn photographers. Be sure to check out my class and stop by afterwards to say hey! On another note, if you have been to Vegas before, what’s your favorite part? I’m always looking to discover awesome new adventures in Las Vegas! Leave your comments below!

We are so excited about this upcoming year here at Blair Phillips Photography! With brand new sets and props inside and outside of the studio, you’re going to start seeing photos that will set a new bar for high school senior photography. The one thing that we are the most excited about though is our brand new senior model program called the Little Rockstar program. We are getting ready to kick it off and we’re looking for some high school seniors who love our style of photography.

Studio Design Star

Do you remember studying for a really hard, important test when you were younger? You’d study and study to learn the information and when that test score comes back showing that all you worked paid off, it’s a feeling like no other. Suzanne and I were fortunate enough to get that feeling once more while we were at SYNC Seniors in St. Pete’s Beach, Florida last week.

To kick off the 2012 convention, SYNC put on a competition that would showcase the nations best photography studio lobbies, indoor shooting areas and outdoor shooting areas. We entered our newly renovated studio into both the Best Lobby and Best Indoor Area with our fingers crossed.  (For anyone who had been in or seen our previous studio, you know what we came from!) Over the past few years, we’ve put so much work into the new studio and we were so excited to finally share it with people outside of our clients. The opening program started and Darty (the SYNC president) jumped right into the finalists of the Best Lobby category. Much to our surprise, we were the first ones called on stage. I was shocked for a few moments. Was this a joke?

I made my way to the stage to talk about the process we took of building our lobby. I’d love to tell you what all I said while under those stages lights but it happened so fast, I’m not sure what rambled about! I was in absolute shock. The judges had some wonderfully nice comments about the color choices in the studio as well as the nice use of negative space.  It was truly an honor to even be considered a finalist!

The remainder of the Best Lobby finalists were called and after seeing their lobbies, I knew we were done for but miraculously, when the winner was announced, our name was shown! As I mentioned earlier, it was an honor to even be considered a finalist but to actually win was an incredible feeling! If that was the end of the night, I could sleep happily.

The next 2 awards, Best Indoor Shooting Area and Best Outdoor Shooting Area, went to incredibly well deserving photographers. Mac Brown Photographers won Best Outdoor Shooting Area and Walt Steinmetz won Best Indoor Shooting Area. Both of their spaces are absolutely incredible and put my areas to shame.  To have our studio in the same categories as their was an amazing distinction.  After the initial 3 winners took their prizes, Darty informed everyone that it wasn’t over just yet. The top 3 studios were then put head-to-head to determine the Top Studio Design Star. After several minutes of palm-sweating angst, Darty finally announced the winner…

SYNC Design Star

Are you serious?! I was absolutely floored to be named SYNC’s 2012 Studio Design Star! Because we built a complete package, great lobby and indoor shooting area, we were able to walk away with the grand prize of a $1500 lab credit from H&H Color Lab. (You better believe we’re going to have some photos of Ava hanging up now!) On top of the title and lab credit, we received this sweet looking trophy pictured above.  We’re truly excited and honored to hold this title for a year and it gives us new appreciation for our space. Take a look at the photos below to see some images of both our lobby and indoor shooting area.

From the very start, we like to show clients what our brand is all about. The lobby is the first place that clients get the sense that we have a high end brand but still very obtainable and approachable.  Simplistic was the main thought process for the lobby. We didn’t want to crowd up the walls with tons of prints so we opted to hang larger single prints to create nice relaxing negative space for visitors eyes.

The shooting area in the back is packed with roughly 20 different custom built sets with numerous props and furniture pieces.  These different bays allow us to capture a variety of looks for each client ranging from grungy old doors to elegant chandeliers. We are so proud of our space and we feel that it gives each and every one of our clients a photography experience that is hard to forget.  Thank you again to SYNC for awarding us with such an awesome award! We are truly honored!  Now, we’ve heard from SYNC. We want to hear from you now. What’s your favorite part of our studio? Leave your comments below and be sure to tweet this post out to friends and Like it on Facebook!

February 6, 2012 - 7:24 pm Amy Stern - Wow! Your studio is awesome. Congratulations on your award!

February 8, 2012 - 3:37 pm Sandy - Congrats!!!! Can I ask where you got your white frames and chandliers?

February 8, 2012 - 11:22 pm Blair Phillips - Hi Sandy! We purchased the white frames from New West Molding. Some of the smaller chandeliers are from Ikea while the larger ones are from a private vendor. I'll try to find their contact info and post it here.

February 11, 2012 - 10:01 pm Sandy - Thanks Blair, I have been searching for awhile for chandliers like those, I would love to know where you got the big ones. I appreciate it!

SYNC Seniors Rocked!

Wow, what an incredible weekend! This past weekend, we had the honor of speaking at our absolutely favorite convention, SYNC Seniors. SYNC is a national convention that is dedicated directly for high school seniors and children. Four hundred and fifty incredible photographers pack out the TradeWinds Resort in St. Pete’s Beach, FL each year to learn, play and grow their business. This year was no different.

Last friday, we boarded an early morning flight to Tampa, FL and I was so nervous. Now, I’ve been on dozens of flights before so I wasn’t nervous about the ride. I was nervous that this year at SYNC, I was going to be a Platform speaker with 450 of my peers and heroes listening to me! I’ve spoken to larger crowds but there is just something about this conference!

We arrived in Tampa a few hours later and loaded up in a taxi to be carted off to the beach. As soon as we stepped out of the taxi at the Tradewinds, you could feel the electricity. JumpStart classes had been going on earlier in the day so people were really excited about what the weekend would hold. We checked in and then headed over to the Trade Show are where we were having our very first show booth to promote our workshops and products to assist photographers.  This Trade Show turned out to be an incredible experience for the entire team. We were able to meet a ton of great people and share what we do with numerous other photographers around the US.

That evening, we were able to meet several great friends including Brett and Jake of Life Camera Actions, Scott Crosby, Bob Ashmun and more. It is such a great feeling to meet old and new friends at these events! Over the next couple of days, along with the Trade Show, we sat in numerous classes that made the trip worth the while. Photography genus’ like Kent and Sarah Smith and Brian Killian rocked the house with great programs, showing that SYNC Seniors gets better and better each year.

The weekend went by and Monday rolled around along with my 1:30 presentation “Become the Coolest Kid In School.” I was the last platform speaker so I had a lot to live up to and follow.  I was so nervous but once my feet hit the stage, I felt right at home. It is such a rewarding feeling to help out other photographers in need! For a hour and a half, I shared how we photograph high school seniors, use videos to promote sections of our business and more. It flew by but it couldn’t have went more perfectly. Everyone was so excited about the topics we were coving and I had several people approach me afterwards telling me that I had given them so many ideas to take back home with. That is such an amazing feeling knowing that something I might have said will fuel that person for the following year and help them make strides to improve their business.  I’m so excited to worth with SYNC Seniors again in the future, even if it is just handing out name badges! If you ever get a chance to attend, please do yourself a favor and book your spot immediately once registration opens. SYNC is one convention you don’t want to miss!

On a completely different note, please visit our good friend Scott Crosby’s new blog BennyTheBus.com and participate in the auction to help Dian and Jim Garber’s son Chase who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Please donate to this awesome cause!

Nikki + Marcus | Denver, NC Wedding

I love country weddings.  They just have this unique feel to them that hard to duplicate in any other settings and Nikki and Marcus’ wedding was one of those hard to duplicate events.  Nikki and Marcus’ September 18th wedding in Denver, North Carolina was held at a family friends home which gave the wedding a wonderful, intimate feel.  The relaxed, creek side ceremony sported organic and earthy decor which matched the couples personality and style to a tee. After the ceremony, the newly wed couple and their guests headed to Mooresville, NC for the reception which was hosted at Jeffrey’s.

It was truly an honor to work with such an incredible couple and we wish them many, many years of happy marriage.  Below are several images from Nikki and Marcus’ wedding for you to enjoy.  Leave a comment below congratulating the new couple or share this post of Twitter or Facebook!

Introducing Ava Blair Phillips

The past 9 months have been an up and down roller coaster to say the least but we would do it again in a heartbeat after meeting our beautiful daughter for the first time.  After over 20 hours of being in labor, Ava Blair Phillips was born on the afternoon of August 3rd, weighing 7 pounds 15 ounces and just 20 inches long.  We kept our fingers crossed for 9 months in hopes that she would have hair when she was born and boy did we get it.  Ava has almost as much hair as I do!  She is an incredibly well natured baby and we couldn’t imagine life without her now.

Thank you so much for all your thoughts, prayers, and kind words.  Suzanne and I are truly blessed and we’re excited to see our little family grow.  Below are some photos from Ava’s newborn session last week. We hope you enjoy and please feel free to comment, “Like” the post or tweet it out to your followers!
