Experience...

It is something you can't put a price on. There is no substitute for experience.   I have several hundred weddings under my belt along with over 500 studio sessions a year.  We started only 7 short years ago, setting out to be different and to make a name for ourself armed with only an old Fuji DSLR and a truck load of determination. While some people say you should focus on a specialty, we photograph a little bit of everything and it has worked out pretty good for us so far.

Along with photographing, I also teach on a national level and offer quarterly workshops, sharing our entire buisness with other photographers. To see all things workshop related, visit BlairPhillipsWorkshops.com

Vintage Vanity | A 2012 Limited Edition Session

Growing up, I remember my grandmothers sewing machine and accessories next to a stack of old Vanity Fair magazines. It was always comforting to see. When planning our 2012 Fall Limited Edition sessions, that comforting memory sparked an idea, an idea that turned into Vintage Vanity.

Vintage Vanity | Blair Phillips PhotographyFor both boys & girls, Vintage Vanity takes few steps back in the past featuring a plethora of vintage items including a classic Singer sewing machines, 1930′s period dress forms, timeless furniture & fabrics, and much more. One of the best things about this Limited Edition session is that fact that we provide the outfits, jewelry, hair & makeup for the little ladies and über awesome suspenders and hats for the little guys! (For little fellas, we do suggest bringing them some knickers and button down shirt) For the little ladies, be sure to bring a pair of mom’s high heels to wear. Vintage Vanity will take place on Saturday, September 15 and this is one Limited Edition session that we are extremely excited about!

Limited Edition sessions are much different than our regular sessions for several reasons. First, this set is only available for this one day and with only 22 mini sessions available, there is now better time to book than now. A session fee of just $25 reserves your Vintage Vanity session but because sessions are so few, this session fee is non-refundable.

Now, one of the best things about our Limited Edition sessions is the fact that you get to build your own package with exclusive special pricing. This a la carte approach allows you to pick and choose the prints and products that you want rather than being stuck with things maybe you don’t need. We have everything from Wall Portraits to wallets available so that you can enjoy these incredible images for years and years to come. The only requirement for building your own package is that a $150 minimum order* be placed. For more information on how packages work, just shoot the studio a call and we’ll give you all the information you need.

One Year In A Flash

August 3rd, 2011 was a day I will never forget.  The memories are so vivid that I still feel as if I am living those moments.  It was exactly 365 days ago that my wife endured labor for a very long while to give birth to our gift from above.  When we found out that we were expecting, I wanted to shout it from the rooftops since remaining quiet is not one of my best qualities.  Suzanne was such a trooper throughout her pregnancy and provided the perfect growing spot for Ava.

I was sitting on the couch when the first real contraction hit Suzanne.  She asked if we should call the doctor but I was already on the phone.  Of course, he said to get to the hospital and see if this would be the day.  There were several times I wished I could take her place as she endured those contractions.  We were admitted to our room where Ava would enter the world and it seemed as if everything had just stopped!  Labor continued for a whopping 38 hours before Ava entered our life and as tears welled up as I laid eyes on her for the first time, I could help but think that she was the most adorable baby ever.

When all the dust settled and it was only the three of us in our room for the night, that was the moment it all became so surreal.  Finally, my little family I had always dreamed of was here.  The next two days only got better and then it was time to go home.

I remember driving home like a 16 year old with his driving instructor.  The speedometer never hit speeds above 35 and  I was constantly yelling like an old man instructing everyone to slow down.  I was all of a sudden a very cautious driver with a whole new outlook on life.  Parenthood came really easy for me and I cherish everyday I have with her.  Being a father has taught me to really pay attention to what is most important, and that is all the little things in life.  Ava gives me so much motivation to be the best that I can be at everything and  I look forward to teaching her the exact same thing as she continues to grow.  We do everything as a family and I have all kinds of plans for when she gets bigger.

Today is Ava’s birthday. All of her birthday party plans are in place and we are so blessed with a such a healthy, and incredible fearless, daughter.  We are having so much fun that it is hard to think of having another child right now, but who knows, maybe someday we will be able to experience this all over again with another amazing child.

Thank you to everyone who have helped us over this past year. It means so much more to us than you know. Also, be sure to stay tuned as we will have another post with lots of pictures from her party this weekend! Feel free to leave Ava some birthday wishes below in the comments too!

Kathleen & Travis | A Huntersville, NC Wedding

Have you ever been to one of those weddings where everyone in attendance is just so excited to experience an awesome evening? Kathleen and Travis’ wedding on July 21st was one of those weddings!

I’ve known Travis for close to 10 years now as we are cousins and it’s so awesome to see him be so happy with someone. I’ve know Kathleen for a much shorter amount of time but it is easy to see that she is a perfect match for Travis. Both have a heart of gold and they’re a true joy to be around. Their wedding, which took place at the Birkdale Country Club in Huntersville, NC, was one of the most laid back, chill weddings we haven’t ever been to, despite the ridiculous heat. Kathleen and Travis both just took in and enjoyed their beautiful tent-ceremony. It really couldn’t get much better.

After the wedding, we of course took some photos of the newly weds together along with family shots and wedding party photographs. The entire wedding party were troopers! After the photos, the wedding party were introduced into the reception, starting the real party. Everyone danced and enjoyed the festivities until late into the night, making it a night to remember.

Kathleen is a perfect fit for Travis and I know they will have years and years of happy marriage. Congrats again guys! While you are here, be sure to leave Kathleen & Travis some love! Like the post, Tweet it out or even Pin it to your Pinterest board!

New York has the buildings and L.A. has the lights but no where else in the world has the atmosphere that Las Vegas, NV does. If you’ve been to Vegas, you know what I’m talking about. July 31, 2012 - 10:09 am Cindy McLawhorn - Hey!!!! This will definately be that ONE time that "What happens in Vegas DOES NOT stay in Vegas"!!!I want this registration because I need that extra SOMETHING to boost my photography business to that next level. Thanks for the opportunity to go!! Shout out from eastern NC!! Cindy

July 31, 2012 - 10:10 am Danielle - I would LOVE to go to WPPI U!! I've only been to WPPI once, and wasn't able to attend the University. Can't wait for WPPI 2013!!!

July 31, 2012 - 10:14 am Randy Hendrix - I'd love to go to WPPI so I can learn from the best of the best in our industry. Plus, it'll help get me out of this house full of women for a few days.....wife, Nanny, three daughters, Mom...Oh, and two dogs! HELP ME!!!

July 31, 2012 - 10:18 am Suzanne Garland - I would LOVE to attend WPPI U. I've never been to U or WPPI at all so this would be a great experience for me :)

July 31, 2012 - 10:24 am Nancy Mullins - I would love to go! Any kind of education is the best kind! Always looking for that "edge".

July 31, 2012 - 10:40 am Autumn - Oh please PICK ME :) I have never attended WPPI but it has been on my wish list since I started my business 2 years ago. Thanks for this awesome giveaway!!!!

July 31, 2012 - 12:17 pm Nicole Webbet - I have wanted to go to WPPI the past couple of years. I want to go so that I can learn and be inspired from the best in the industry. With having a new Photograpy business, I want to learn how to run it properly in a way that will help grow the industry. Thank you for the opportunity!

August 1, 2012 - 12:48 am Allison - I would love to attend WPPI U Vegas because my biggest regret is not studying more photography in college to make my dreams more of a reality. I'm looking forward to next (natural light) season when I quit my job to do photography full time and make my dreams come true. This would be the perfect way to give my dreams a jump start! (btw, sorry if this ends up posting twice, my phone likes to throw temper tantrums!!)

August 2, 2012 - 9:32 am Richie Carter - I'd almost be tempted to say that I would run down the street naked holding a sign saying that "I was picked by Blair to Attend WPPI"... but what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! Anyway, pick ME!!!!!

August 2, 2012 - 10:55 am Kacey Doyle - Being from a tiny town of 2,000, there have never been enough opportunities for me to meet and learn from the Photo Legends of our time. After graduating with a BFA in Photography, I'm finding it harder and harder to meet new people in the business who I can swap stories with and learn from. A trip to WPPI would rock my world! I've been dieing to go for years, and with my business still being in infancy, what better time?

August 3, 2012 - 2:08 pm Jessica Lynn - The main reason I would love to go is to meet you!!! You see like such an amazing person, so giving, and fun!! You are a great family man and you seem so fun!!lol!! I wish I would have had a photographer like you when I was a Senior, I would love to go learn everything you have to offer, in my small town, there is not much to offer on learning and usually I have to drive four to 6 hours or more when I want to learn something!! Would be a blessing to get a chance to learn from one of the Best!!!

August 6, 2012 - 12:30 am Regina Doeppel - I believe in continuous learning, never let your mind get stale. I would love to attend to build my photo skills and my business skills to get my business moving foward. I want to walk away from my corporate job ASAP. I need to be doing what I love, photography. Another reason is because I will get to see you. You ROCK! I I was very sad to hear you were not coming to Los Angeles for Sandy Puc tour. Thanks for this amazing opportunity.

August 6, 2012 - 12:34 am Dave Doeppel - I want to go to WPPI to be inspired and motivated by experts. The passion of the instructors at wppi will help me to push my photography further.

August 6, 2012 - 12:45 pm Analisa Brookshier - I want to go to wppiu because I have started my entire business by being self taught and I would love the opportunity to learn more about it. I have never had the money to attend classes, but when I attended my first workshop last year it was the best learning experience! Also, I just got married one month ago and it would be the best wedding present!! If I won a free registration than my husband would definitely let us go!! :)

Lindsay + Chad | A Salisbury, NC Wedding

2012 has been a year for awesome weddings and broken records. Little did they know, Lindsay and Chad’s would schedule to have their June 30th wedding on the hottest day on record for the Salisbury, North Carolina area but despite the grueling heat, they marched on with the festivities to have one fantastic wedding. Lindsay and Chad both are extremely down to earth  and we’re really laid back on the wedding day while taking photos, disregarding the 105˚ heat! They tied the knot at the beautiful First Baptist Church of Salisbury with numerous friends and family in attendance.

After the ceremony, the party moved to the Holiday Inn for dinner, drinks and dancing including an impressive choreographed dance with Lindsay and her dad. Virtual Sounds Entertainment kept the party going with music throughout the night and Chelish Moore’s decorations made the reception looked top-notch.

We wish Lindsay and Chad all the best and many, many years of happy marriage. Be sure to check out the images from the wedding below as well as Share this post on Facebook, Pin it or tweet it out!

Introducing ReBooku

We’re so pumped about today’s blog post because of both the guest author and the topic. Ty and Shannon Fischer are great friends of ours as well as incredible photographers and business people. We first met them 2 years ago in Ohio at a speaking engagement and immediately clicked with them. They are wonderful photographers and fantastic business people. Earlier this year, they approached us with an idea that we were really excited about. Rather than rambling on and on, trying to explain what it is, I’ll let the man behind the curtain tell you all about it.

“As a high school senior photographer, one of my main goals is always looking for new ways to cut the amount of time I spend at the computer and increase time spent behind the camera. Though our company is very efficient with retouch and editing, what has become an increasingly larger issue for us is book and album design. One of our largest selling items to our senior clients is our coffee table books. Even with the aid of pre-designed templates, I still find it takes me at least an hour to insert my client’s images into the templates before uploading to the lab. During our busy season I am committing 15-20 hours a week to album and book design. I knew I couldn’t be the only one dealing with this time consuming problem so I began reaching out to several of my photography friends around the country and found I wasn’t alone. Many other professional photographers are also having the same problems, or worse yet, they aren’t able to offer albums to clients due to the amount of design time involved. Shortly after our new found discoveries, my wife Shannon and I began looking at ways to make not only our life easier, but photographers from around the country lives’ less stressful.

From this insight, rebookü was born. Rebookü, pronounced ree-boo-koo, stands for retouch and books for you! This is the first company of its kind to be targeted specifically to high school senior photographers. Imagine having the ability to go to a website where all of an image’s needs can be covered by one company. Rebookü not only offers color correction and some amazing retouch services, but also features 5 of the top artistic actions from Brett Jarnigan’s Life. Camera. Actions! Even more exciting is the featured service of our book template service. Rebookü has brought on 4 of the top high school senior photographers in the country who have taken the time to design both boy and girl templates specific to rebookü. You now have the ability to have your images displayed in a book template from Blair & Suzanne Phillips, Ty & Shannon Fischer, Dan Frievalt or Kevin Hudson & Kaui Nichols. Standard pricing for a book template begins at $30 and includes 11 spreads, 22 sides and 30 images of your client. The process is simple and flawless, and the designs have been created so that they are universal lab application. You can choose spreads or sides, or better yet use our “turn-key solution” and for a small service fee plus the cost of the book we will upload your templates to one of our two preferred labs; Black River Imaging or H&H Color Lab. The finished book can be at your front door within a few days.

Aside from the unique services offered at rebookü, the best possible customer service is provided. Not only do we offer email and phone support, but we also feature a live online chat feature and extremely powerful proofing software that will allow you to review your book template design, make revisions and/or additions prior to you receiving the final product. Let’s face it, mistakes are going to happen and our goal is to not only minimize any errors, but to make sure that corrections are made prior to receiving a final product.

So I gotta ask? Are you…Will you…Do you rebookü? Give us a try at www.rebooku.com. It will change the way you do business and add freedom to your life.” – Ty Fischer

We’re so excited about Rebooku and if you’re a photographer looking to cut your post-production time down, this is it. You’ll love Rebooku! To ee instructional videos for using rebookü, click here and be sure to Like Rebooku on Facebook. Also, be sure to follow Rebooku on Twitter.

June 1, 2012 - 2:23 pm Jen Clark - Shy girls need love too;) Oh!!! and my kids are at camp that week too!! Yippeee, I'm free!

June 1, 2012 - 2:45 pm Nathan Ballash - We are in the process of trying to convert an old garage into a studio...so needless to say any educational trip has been out of the question, until now!! A trip to NJ from PA might just be the perfect excuse to put down the power tools for a few days!!

June 1, 2012 - 4:16 pm Sue Phillips - Reasons to WIN the registration: For Blair to meet the "other" Suzanne Phillips (yes, my legal name is actually the same as his wife!) To get some training from an AWESOME photographer To get to see baseball games on the east coast after the workshop.... PRICELESS

June 1, 2012 - 4:35 pm Jenn Davis - Let’s see, why choose me? I'm a photographer who after too many years of dragging my feet has finally decided to start my own business. I received the kick in the pants I needed last fall when I lost my job. While I would love to say I am off to a roaring success I have come across more hurdles then I could have imagined. It’s not been easy, and I have next to no clients at this point, I am not giving up hope, and I am not going to quit. I know that I would learn a great deal of information not only from you, but from everyone else I meet at this workshop. I also know that unless I win I would not be able to attend this workshop because I don’t have the funds to do so. I do hope you give me some consideration because I would love the opportunity.

June 2, 2012 - 11:44 am dustin weiss - checked you out on photobiz's webinar and learned a lot! now it's time to see it action 'live'! so......pick me! pick me! pick me! why you ask? i'm tooo broke to grab tickets or much of anything else for that matter cuz i just paid for a beautiful wedding in your neck of the woods......atalaya castle in murrels inlet, sc. would love to see some of that southern talent his our streets here! keep me in the running please! i have a strong foundation but always wanna learn!!!

June 2, 2012 - 12:12 pm Rosanna Hanson - HELP!! I have three teenage daughters that cost A LOT & are driving me crazy now that they are home for the summer! Mamma needs to make more money and I've tried just about every thing. TAKE ME A WAY!!!!! God Bless :)

June 2, 2012 - 12:14 pm Rosanna Hanson - BTW did I mention that I have an enormous amount of Student loans that i have to pay off. And although I'm appreciative about my education in photography I really didn't learn to run a business and make money

June 2, 2012 - 12:19 pm Rosanna Hanson - bummer I'm lame . Just noticed this is for NJ. I can't fly out there. Thought it was for Vegas that I can drive to :(

June 4, 2012 - 10:36 am Linda Peluso - Hi Blair! I've been following you online all year and think you are awesome! I love how you want to share with beginner photographer entrepreneurs , like myself. Like so many starting out with their own business in today's economy, I would love to attend your workshop, but truly can not afford it. Why do I think I should win? Well, I was married for eight years when I started my business. My husband saw my passion for photography and acknowledged my talent, but was extremely resentful of the time it took away from him. I would buy a lens with my own saved money (after paying half of all the bills) and he wouldn't talk to me for 2 weeks. Eventually, I was true to myself and my artistic talents. I left my husband and bought my own farmhouse, future studio. What was three acres of dandelions, now has seven beautiful gardens/grasses/fields for photo shoot backdrops. I've worked incredibly hard this past year and spent more money than I have (raiding my retirement money and incurring high credit card debt). I still believe in myself and my eventual success, but right now I have virtually no paying customers! I really want and need to learn more about lighting, as I only use natural light and am very limited by that. I love your lighting system and know that could open up many possibilities for me. I used to mostly shoot newborns and young children. Just this year I've begun shooting high school age kids. I love their enthusiasm! I also love helping kids feel really good about themselves, improving their self image. Your senior shoots are amazing and I know there is a whole lot I could learn from you at your workshop! Please give me consideration! Thank you!! ps. When I bought my own house, I also took in my elderly mother (w/dementia) and have my brain injured brother (a motorcycle accident victim) on weekends. This doesn't have much to do with anything, except to show I'm a hard worker and a pretty nice/caring (hopefully deserving) person! Thanks again, Blair...

June 4, 2012 - 11:52 am Carol Davis - After 22 years of raising children and giving all my time to them, I have put the wheels in motion to devote my time now to my lifelong passion of photography. I read everything I can get my hands on, watch youtube videos, watch creativelive and practice practice practice - yet I still don't feel as though I'm "getting it." My husband and I met in high school as photographers (newspaper and yearbook), and have always wanted this opportunity to continue our dream. This past spring he was laid off from a job which he "climbed the ladder" - after ten years of devotion. It's now time to put that devotion into our own family and the rest of our life. Being at WPPI U can only give us the gas we need to pour on the fire. We hope you will consider us. Carol and Tom Davis

June 4, 2012 - 12:16 pm Tara Jackson - I want them, I want them. I WANT them!!! Why? Because although I DO now work as a photographer, photographing furniture for a local furniture company (my least favorite subject!!!), I would have much rather worked for the Blair Phillips studio, not photographing anything. :) So rather than soak up the wonder that IS the talent of Blair Phillips by being at the studio, I would love to soak it up by learning directly from the WPPI seminar... Although then you run the risk of competition in the area (no, not really... our styles are very different.) Ah to be surrounded by that drive and talent and passion. Ah to get an up again on what it will take to make MY personal work succeed. Ah... to get out from under the suffocation of cut outs and silos. Please Blair. Please. :)

June 4, 2012 - 7:28 pm Sue Phillips - I have to add that I REALLY REALLY WANT 2 win. Found out today that PPA gave me bad advice on a copyright infringement and I'm really bummed about it. This would definitely cheer me up!

Lamb Shots Was Awesome!

Do you remember going to the petting zoo when you were a kid? That feeling of petting an animal that wasn’t a cat or dog was always such a very unique feeling. Several weeks back, we had the opportunity give some little guys and girls that feeling for the very first time. Our Limited Edition session Lamb Shots turned out to be a hit with both kids and their parents, giving them some really unique Easter images.

We were able to snag our new fury friends from Clippity Clop to You located in Locust, NC. After meeting the owners, we immediately knew that we were in good hands because they truly cared about their clients as well as their animals. For this session, we had 2 spunky lambs (one white and one chocolate) and 3 rabbits (2 little guys and 1 Giant Flemming) join us. These were some of the most well behaved animals we have worked with yet. The lamb stayed in his spot for several long stents of time and the rabbits were very content, as long as they were eating!

For the most part, all the kids loved the animals. Much to our surprise, we didn’t have one melt down or anything! When you’re working with kids as young as we do, you have to prepare and expect the worst because you never know how they might react to an animal that is as big as they are. With Mom’s and Dad’s close by, we shot image and image without a single tear and those images turned out to be some of my favorite images from any of our Limited Edition sessions. Take a look at some images from Lamb Shots below!

April 11, 2012 - 9:32 am Savannah Marett - I would have to say my favorite Easter moment would have to be a few years ago and going to sunrise service on the beach. It was just an awesome experience and you could truly feel that God was present as you were watching the sunrise behind the preacher.

April 11, 2012 - 10:29 am Linda Kain - Blair, We recently had the pleasure of visiting your studio while we were in Charlotte. We are from New York. We were at the studio to view our grandson, Pierce O. Wing's first birthday pictures. The pictures are absolutely amazing. I have never seen such beautiful shots. It was very difficult for his mommy and daddy to choose. Although my first glimpse of the picture with Pierce at the steering wheel in the pick-up was my first choice. Of course, I had to have that picture to display back home. Another favorite of ours was the picture of Pierce on the piano keys and I look forward to seeing all of the pictures in the album that Ashley ordered. I also ordered one of the black leather bracelets with his picture on it and now that we have returned to NY I am patiently awaiting the bracelet so I can share it with all of our NY grandparents. On another note, the lamb pictures on your website are incredible! Each picture has it's own marking. I only wish we lived closer and would love to do a grandparents picture with Pierce next time we are in Charlotte. Thank you for making our everyday life so wonderful looking at the pictures on our mantle of little Pierce - they are so life like it's like he's right there visiting us! Linda & Rick Kain

April 11, 2012 - 10:50 am sarah hollifield - Ok this is beautiful! It reminds me of when our kids were little. Both had a lamb cake for their 1st birthday, as did Ron (dad) had on his 1st birthday. Would love to carry in the tradition when we get grands. But better yet a photo other a real lamb! So precious!!! A27A

Lamb Shots | A 2012 Limited Edition Session

Around this time of the year, we start to get really excited here at the studio because it usually means that Easter season photos are just around the corner. Each year, we try to bring in several cute bunnies for our kiddos to cuddle up with during their Easter session but this year, we’re blowing the roof of this place.

Lamb Shots

Lamb Shots, this years Easter Limited Edition Session, will be complete with two precious baby lambs, ready to be petted and played with. As if the two cute lambs weren’t enough, we’re also having two adorable Giant Fleming rabbits! Now, if you’ve never seen a Giant Fleming rabbit, they are a sight to be seen for sure. Have you ever seen those huge stuffed rabbits at a county or state fair? Picture those but real! These  ”little” guys are the coolest things you’ve ever seen, weighting in at least 15 pounds! They will for sure make a great addition to this years Limited Edition session!

Lamb Shots will be held on Saturday, March 17th and this is a one time only session so be sure to contact the studio and reserve your session time. Sessions are scheduled in 15 minute intervals and special Limited Edition pricing is available. If you’d like to schedule your session, call (704) 855-3656 and a Blair Phillips Photography team member will be glad to set you up with a session! In the meantime, tell us about your favorite Easter memory! Leave a comment below
